COACHIE’S CAKERS

By Gerard Sarnat

Third of four grandsons
so far
each one humors Coach
making
pancakes like his Daddy
did him
just as my boy does now
for Ben.

Benjamin Blaze Sarnat
perhaps’ll
do the exact same with
offspring
even though right now
children
think he’s she ‘cause of
long hair.

But we cannot care less
here in
spring’s garden picking
berries
that are called boysen
insteada
what others call girls-
enberries.

Mornings we flip Mouse
(Mick or Minnie)
flapjacks then dip them
in home-grown
Vermont maple syrup
we read about
in a library book ended
up in California.
