There is no joy behind this dirty old glass. The air is thick with dust and dead insects. A map of the world is pinned to the wall, faded and false. A tattered red book I pulled from the shelf is a diary written in the ghetto. God.

Ten minutes ago I opened a window and begged until a trapped wasp flew out.

I could do it, you know. I could slip into shimmering blue wings. I’m blue anyway. I could circle, fly higher and higher, then dive. I could hurtle toward earth, and then rise.
